FOR THOSE LOOKING FOR MORE THAN TO RELAX...At Wildernest, the best thing to do is to stay put. Enjoy the special quality of peace and quiet. Enjoy watching the changing skies and the wildlife. Stroll through the acres of meadows, pastures and woods. Lie in the grass, watch the red kites circling. Read books. Sit on the jetty by the pond. The damp pastures are managed with light grazing to achieve a rich biodiversity of flora and fauna. We cut the meadows for hay just once a year in August, leaving an amazing mix of grasses and flowers, humming with bees, butterflies and other flying insects.
We encourage guests to stroll on the paths cut through the wood and the wildlife haven where there are ground-nesting birds and tunnels for voles and mice. Snipe can explode like landmines!
The Long Barn is open to guests for recreation and for dining. The huge hearth is a focal point. Play games, sing, play the piano, lounge or whatever.
If you want to get out, close by is Aberaeron, a sweet Georgian town with a busy harbour. Llanerchaeron is a National Trust country house with walled garden designed by C18/C19th architect, John Nash.
The market town of Lampeter is 9 miles away and is refreshing in its individuality. Aberystwyth, Cardigan and Carmarthen are all a bit bigger and all about 40 minutes away – in different directions – with art centres and more mainstream shops.
The coast is wild and the coastal path almost continuous. It is reached by a labyrinth of lanes which end in unspoilt little coves and beaches – Mwnt, Cei Bach, Cymtydu, Llangrannog, Llandisiliogogo.
New Quay is a seaside town you will remember, with snaking streets and coloured terraces. The arm of the massive stone quay protects the anchorage, with boats bobbing in the bible-black sea. It was the inspiration for Dylan Thomas’s fictional setting, Llareggub.
Activities are geared to outdoors – with seaside things at New Quay and the little beaches beyond; coastal walks, mountain walks, and moorland walks; excursions along the coast to see porpoises, seals and dolphins on the Marine Wildlife Centre survey vessels; foraging for food in farm shops, and of course indoor local eating and drinking in cosy, friendly hostelries.
