Night sky
The loss of dark skies has happened unwittingly and insidiously. Most of England has lost the sight of the Milky Way, shooting stars, Orion’s sword and nebula. The spectre of stars is now precious and it exists at Wildernest. There is little light pollution, no PIR intruder lights, no external lighting, and no lights from roads and houses are visible.
It is evident that artificial external lighting impacts the natural rhythm of plants and animals, birds and bats, insects and amphibians.
Explore Wildernest at night without a torch – after 10 minutes our eyes accommodate to the low light level. On a February moonless night, with a cloudless sky I have counted 19 stars in Orion.
The Cambrian Mountains have recently gained National Geographic recognition as one of the top six new trails worldwide for astro-tourism. Wildernest is every bit as good as the Dark Sky Discovery Sites – and better as it’s off the record.
