This is our straw bale house – one space with a stoep all along the front. It faces exactly south with private aspect over meadows to hillsides. It is designed to be really warm and comfortable. Inside there is a single space with a proper shower room and a perfect little kitchen at one end. The sleeping area is behind a oak lath screen at the other end.
We have built this ourselves including the larch round-wood frame and lime-hemp-hair render. It is naturally cosy, of course, with the straw bale walls and sheep wool in the roof – doubly so with underfloor heating and a small woodburner.
Energy comes from our wind turbine and an innovative small evaporator plate heat pump – and it works! No hair-driers.
